This recognition inevitably makes one thinking and asking: why have we devoted so much time to developing matters that are common to the entire sector?
Each of us no doubt has our own answers. For me, the most important reason has been the belief that the construction sector—and in particular the quality of the indoor environment—can be improved together, day by day. This has also been my motivation in RTS committee work. A single meeting or document rarely changes the world, but sustained collaboration creates practices, guidelines and shared understanding that are ultimately reflected in thousands of projects and in the everyday lives of millions of people.
In the construction sector, we often talk about buildings, infrastructure and technology. In reality, however, it is about people: those who design, build, maintain, use and develop the built environment.
That is why I find the CEO’s thought particularly apt: that this year’s recipients of the Golden Achievement Award are united by broad-based expertise and a commitment to developing the sector. Alongside these, I would add one more quality: the willingness to work for the common good even when one’s own name does not appear in the final outcome.
At the same time, we all know that recognitions such as these are never achieved alone. Behind each person honoured here are colleagues, partners, mentors, apprentices and friends who have shared their expertise, challenged us to think better and more holistically, and above all made possible the work for which we are now being thanked.
The construction sector is currently undergoing major change. Responsibility, digitalisation, productivity and safety continually challenge us to renew ourselves. That is precisely why we will continue to need forums where different actors in the sector can meet, network, exchange views and build a shared vision of the future. RTS has long provided such a forum, and through its guidance cards and guides it also passes good practice forward.
We, the recipients of the Golden Achievement Award, accept this recognition with gratitude. At the same time, we see it as an encouragement to continue working for the benefit of the Finnish construction sector.
Finally, I extend my warm thanks to RTS, to all our partners, and to our loved ones who have supported us along the way.
